Instructor
I am an Advanced Ground Instructor, and pilot that has been flying for 40+ years. I teach Private Pilot and Instrument ground schools here at Gateway to prepare you for your FAA Knowledge exam(s). I also impart knowledge and lessons learned beyond what is needed for the exam to make you a safe, confident, competent, and complete aviator.
My professional training is as an engineer. I have worked for several military defense contractors on aircraft avionics & systems. I recently retired from Boeing where I developed flight training systems for Military platforms. Specifically the Trainer development of the IOS (Instructor & Operator Station) for the AH-64, F-15, F-18, F-16, P-8A, T-38, T-45, and T-7 platforms. I also have been, at times, involved in the F/A-18 aircraft system development.
While not a professional pilot, I have many years of experience as a pilot flying in the national airspace system, just as you as a new pilot or instrument student will do. Because of my background I think I can bring a slightly different approach to your training and approach to safety. I have been a member and board member on numerous flying clubs, rented aircraft from lots of schools and FBOs, and am an aircraft owner (Van's RV-10). This also allows me to lend perspective and lessons learned on your flying for after you have your pilot certificate (which is not knowledge you get from studying for an FAA test ).
As a Scoutmaster for over 10 years and manager with Boeing for 15, I have always enjoyed the mentor role. I have mentored many Eagle scouts. I continue to help mentor pilots thru the EAA Eagle & Young Eagle programs as well as teach ground school thru Gateway. I am also available to fly as safety pilot for those building instrument time, or just take you as student pilots for a fun flight in my plane to see the ATC system in work w/o the stress and cost of a flight lesson.
I hope meet you and assist however I can in your aviation and pilot journey.
