Kevin A. Wood has been passionate about aviation for more than 40 years and brings a diverse background of professional flying, flight instruction, corporate aviation, cargo operations, and Commercial Airline experience to Gateway Flight Training.
Kevin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduating in 1989. During college, Kevin played quarterback for the 1983 Saluki Football National Champions, participated in four years of Air Force ROTC and was accepted as a United States Air Force pilot trainee. Early in his aviation career, he completed Trans World Airlines (TWA) Boeing 727 Flight Engineer training and holds a Flight Engineer (Turbojet) certificate.
Throughout his career, Kevin has flown under Part 91, Part 135, and Part 121 operations. His experience includes corporate aviation in the Cessna Citation 550, for which he earned a CE-550 type rating, as well as cargo operations flying the historic Beech 18 taildragger (U.S. Air Force C-45) carrying U.S. Mail and UPS freight. He also flew Aero Commander 500B aircraft in cargo operations based in Wichita, Kansas.
Kevin's airline career includes flying for Northwest Airlink, Trans World Express, Trans States Airlines, and American Connection, where he accumulated thousands of hours operating turbine aircraft in the Commercial Airline operations.
Kevin holds Airline Transport Pilot (ATP), Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Certified Flight Instructor–Instrument (CFII), Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI), and Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) certificates. He also serves as a multi-engine instructor in the Cessna 310 and enjoys helping pilots develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become safe, proficient aviators.
Whether working with a student earning a private pilot certificate, an instrument rating, a commercial certificate, or advanced multi-engine training, Kevin is committed to providing thorough, professional instruction built on decades of real-world aviation experience.
Outside of aviation, Kevin is an accomplished pianist, an active member of the PGA of America, and a licensed real estate broker. His dedication to professionalism, lifelong learning, and mentoring makes him a valuable member of the Gateway Flight Training instructional team.
